Comedian Marcus Brigstocke has disclosed that he struggled with a pornography addiction and sought assistance to overcome it.
The television personality addressed this matter on The Hidden 20% podcast, mentioning that his addiction began following an extramarital affair that resulted in the dissolution of his first marriage.
Brigstocke, known for his appearances on Have I Got News For You and his role in the film Love Actually, stated that the “shame” stemming from his affair “triggered a lot of very dysfunctional behavior.”
He expressed on the podcast: “I had maintained sobriety from drugs, alcohol, and my compulsive eating disorder, yet I had become addicted to porn.”
“I genuinely did not realize that I was addicted to it. I kind of believed I was consuming a typical amount of porn. However, the common amount of porn nowadays is vastly different from what constituted a normal amount before the internet.”
At the age of 51, Brigstocke informed host Ben Branson that many individuals battling porn addiction “have been addicted since around the age of 11,” noting that it “significantly changes your brain chemistry.”
“There are countless individuals with various degrees of addiction to both porn and online social media,” he continued. “However, porn is the most harmful.”
The comedian revealed that he would binge-watch porn “entire nights” before he sought help to break free from his addiction.
