An incident has surfaced showing Dutch soccer enthusiasts assaulting England fans in Dortmund prior to their Euro 2024 semi-final clash scheduled for tonight.
Injuries and Arrests Following the Scuffle
UK authorities have reported at least five individuals sustaining minor injuries and multiple arrests made as a consequence of the altercation in the German city.
Individuals donning orange attire were seen throwing punches, chairs, and even a sign at purportedly English fans in a video filmed outside Sausalitos restaurant on Kleppingstraße, located in the heart of the host city in Germany.
Amidst the chaos, one man was pulled back by his shirt as he endured blows to his head while seeking shelter.
He was eventually guided towards the restaurant’s entrance where others sought refuge behind outdoor seating.
Tensions Escalate as Fans from Both Sides Clash
Amidst the escalating tension, one individual was spotted standing on a table, seemingly attempting to defuse the situation, while objects were thrown through the air. Some alleged English fans also picked up seats as shields before seeking refuge indoors.
Instances of England fans retaliating against supporters from the Netherlands were also observed.
Eye-witness Account
Ben Joyce Foot, 27, detailed being “confronted in a bar as Dutch fans attacked us,” according to his statement on X at 4.33pm. Minutes prior, he had recommended Sausolitos as a spacious gathering spot following a request from the Free Lions fan community for an alternative meeting point.
He shared a video depicting a thoroughfare filled with Dutch fans in orange attire, with some climbing lampposts and orange smoke permeating the air.
Efforts to Restore Order
Despite the initially jubilant ambiance, the situation deteriorated into violence, though the trigger remains undisclosed.
In a subsequent update at 4.30pm, Ben revealed being restrained by German police, stating “We’ve been attacked by Dutch, and now we are being held back by German police.”
Unity Amidst Turmoil
Ben acknowledged the camaraderie displayed by most Dutch fans present, highlighting their non-participation in the brawl. He expressed gratitude towards a Dutch individual who shared a beverage with him and emphasized that the violent outburst was incited by a minority within the Dutch contingent.
Resolution and Path Forward
The patrons were eventually permitted to leave Sausalitos around 6.40pm, prompting Ben to share his relief online before heading to the match with minimal time to spare.
The UK Football Policing Unit addressed the incident, acknowledging reports of disturbances and reaffirming collaborations between UK and German authorities to manage the situation due to the large presence of Dutch and English fans in Dortmund.
The winning team from this match will advance to face Spain in the upcoming final.
