Details of Profit Allocation
Individuals involved in the publication of the popular memoir by Captain Sir Tom Moore have disclosed that they had anticipated a ‘substantial contribution’ of the proceeds to go towards a charitable cause.
This revelation follows comments made by his daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, 53, revealing that the family retained approximately £800,000 in profits.
Despite Captain Tom expressing in his book a desire for a portion of the funds to support his foundation – The Captain Tom Foundation.
In his words: ‘With the opportunity to pen down this autobiography, I have also been given the platform to raise further funds for the charitable foundation that now bears my name.’
However, Hannah stated that her father’s preference was for the family to retain the earnings.
A source involved in the book’s release informed The Times that ‘all those involved in the project … were under the impression that a notable donation would be made by the family to the foundation.
‘I was uncertain whether it would be the entirety or a significant portion, but I certainly thought there would be a substantial contribution.
‘The publishers were very clear that this was not a charity publication. However, there was a clear expectation of a substantial donation to the foundation.’
Lack of Clarity and Disqualification
Hannah and her husband Colin, 67, were disbarred by the Charity Commission from holding positions as charity trustees.
The family released a statement expressing their ‘fundamental disagreement’ with the ruling.
They explained that they chose not to contest the decision due to the ‘deep emotional turmoil and financial strain, making an appeal unfeasible.’
Legal representatives for Hannah warned that the charity might face closure.
An inquiry into The Captain Tom Foundation was initiated in 2022 amid concerns regarding the lack of autonomy from the family’s business.
Recent Setbacks
The family was also compelled to dismantle a large spa facility earlier this year.
Initially granted permission for an L-shaped structure, a subsequent proposal for a larger C-shaped layout with a spa pool was declined by the planning authority.
Despite the refusal, construction of the spa proceeded, leading to a demolition notice from the local council.
Captain Tom’s Legacy
Captain Tom, who captured the nation’s heart by raising £38 million for NHS charities, set out to complete 100 laps of his garden by his 100th birthday on April 30, 2020.
He passed away on February 2, 2021.
