The Irish Prime Minister, Simon Harris, has strongly criticized a hoax bomb threat directed at his residence on Wednesday night, labeling it as “completely unacceptable.”
Expressing his concern, Mr. Harris stated, “I have young children. I have a spouse.”
He emphasized that the harassment of politicians and their families should not be tolerated and must be put to a halt.
Last week, three individuals were apprehended for allegedly harassing an elected official by congregating outside Mr. Harris’ house.
There has been a rising trend of individuals gathering outside the residences of Irish government ministers, at times wearing masks and displaying anti-immigrant signs.
Migration has ignited heated debates in Ireland as the government grapples with accommodating a record number of refugees, leading to occasional violent demonstrations outside migrant housing facilities.
During a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels, Mr. Harris categorized the situation as “completely unacceptable.”
He expressed, “Even the term ‘hoax’ may not be appropriate, as these acts are undoubtedly carried out to intimidate and cause distress.”
Mr. Harris urged for a collective reflection on how all parties including the media discuss such sensitive matters.
Illustrating his point, he stated, “If masked individuals appeared outside your residence, it wouldn’t be considered a protest.”
“It ceases to be a protest when it occurs outside my residence, and this situation must not be allowed to persist,” concluded Mr. Harris.
