Historical Background
An upcoming auction will feature a pair of the legendary Elvis Presley’s blue suede shoes that are set to become the center of attention.
The popular American artist donned these size 10.5 shoes both on and off the stage throughout the 1950s, notably during a performance on the Steve Allen TV show.
These iconic footwear pieces were obtained by Presley after recording the hit song “Blue Suede Shoes,” composed by fellow musician Carl Perkins, for his debut album in 1956.
Unique Story
Surprisingly, Presley decided to give away this prized possession just a night before his induction into the US army in 1958.
Confirmed by Jimmy Velvet, a close friend of Presley for over two decades and reputed as the top Elvis expert globally, the shoes will be up for bidding with an estimated value of £100,000 to £120,000. The auction will take place on Friday at the renowned auction house, Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire.
Personal Anecdote
Presley handed over the shoes to his dear friend Alan Fortas, who later documented their acquisition in a heartfelt letter.
According to Fortas, “On the eve of Elvis’ enlistment into the army in Memphis, he hosted a grand farewell party at Graceland, followed by a visit to the Rainbow roller rink.”
“While distributing some of his clothes to friends, Elvis bestowed upon me these blue suede shoes of size 10.5, which I have cherished all these years,” Fortas recounted.
Sentiment and Value
Andrew Aldridge, the auctioneer, commented on the significance of the shoes, dubbing them as “truly iconic pieces.” He further expressed, “These shoes encapsulate extraordinary elements of entertainment, music, and cultural history, making them exceptional memorabilia.”
