Former nurse Lucy Letby proclaims innocence in baby killings case
In a court declaration, Lucy Letby, the ex-nurse found guilty of taking the lives of seven infants and attempting to murder six others while employed in a hospital neonatal unit, has vehemently stated that she is “not the type of individual who ends the lives of babies” and asserts her innocence regarding the charges brought against her.
Retrial underway for attempted murder charge
The 34-year-old is undergoing a retrial for the 2016 incident in which she supposedly attempted to murder a baby girl known as Child K by removing the infant’s breathing tube.
Letby was convicted last August for the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.
New trial after previous inconclusive ruling
A verdict on the allegation involving Child K could not be reached previously.
Prosecutors at Manchester Crown Court have alleged that she was apprehended by a doctor who found her next to the incubator of a newborn, neglecting to address dropping blood oxygen levels despite no alarm signals.
During questioning from her defense lawyer, Ben Myers KC, Letby denied ever having any intention to cause harm to any baby under her care.
Letby emphasized her innocence
Letby, addressing the jury, expressed her inability to recall any specific incident involving Child K and denied any wrongful actions related to the incident in question.
Questioned by the prosecution about the tube issue, Letby maintained her stance of innocence, stating that she did not displace the tube.
Letby vehemently denied the accusations
When directly accused by the prosecution of causing the demise of seven babies and attempting to kill six others, with one attempted murder allegedly occurring twice, Letby vehemently disputed these claims.
Responding to the question of her social media search history, Letby asserted her innocence once again, stating that the action was not related to any guilt on her part.
The court case and Child K’s tragedy
Child K, due to her extreme prematurity, was transferred to a specialized hospital on February 17, 2016, and sadly passed away three days later, although Letby is not accused of causing her death.
Letby from Hereford, aged 26 at the time of the reported incident, denies the single charge of attempted murder.
Additionally, there is a court order in place prohibiting disclosure of the identities of the infants involved in the case.
Letby is set to continue presenting her testimony next Tuesday.
