In his new sci-fi series, Rapman, whose real name is Andrew Onwubolu, aims to explore the “black journey” of everyday life.
Located in south London, the Netflix series Supacell depicts the stories of five individuals who suddenly acquire supernatural abilities.
Tosin Cole from Doctor Who stars as Michael Lasaki, a delivery driver who gains the capability to manipulate time.
He uncovers that his partner Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo) is destined to die in a few weeks, but there might be a way to prevent it.
Unaware of each other’s powers, these individuals must unite to save her life over the course of six episodes.
Cole remarks, “We wanted to present diverse lives, varied journeys, and unique narratives these characters undergo – especially when extraordinary powers come into play.”
The Diverse Cast and Social Commentary
The ensemble also includes Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Rayxia Ojo, Giacomo Mancini, and Eddie Marsan.
Moreover, the series showcases appearances from notable figures in the UK music industry, such as Digga D and Ghetts.
Rapman emphasizes, “The show has depth. That’s what intrigues me most.”
Netflix’s Platform for Social Commentary
Netflix has kept storyline specifics of the show confidential until its premiere. However, Calvin Demba, who portrays Rodney, believes it serves as a vital forum to shed light on the challenges faced by the black community.
He expresses, “Incorporating social commentary into an authentic narrative makes it more relatable, particularly with the sci-fi aspect drawing in a wide audience.”
His colleague Josh Tedeku, who plays Tazer, echoes this sentiment and praises Rapman for prioritizing cultural representation in their work.
