Gareth Southgate emphasized the importance of enjoying the football amid increased security measures for England’s Euros opener against Serbia.
The England manager addressed the media in a press conference prior to the match, discussing the decision to intensify security measures for the upcoming game in Gelsenkirchen.
When asked about his message to fans, he stated: “I anticipate everyone to relish the football.
“I’ve been privileged to participate in numerous tournaments and travel to events not directly involving myself.
“These are festive celebrations of football – a chance to explore different parts of the world, interact with people from diverse backgrounds, and have a fantastic time, so I trust everyone is coming with that intention.”
Additionally, he remarked: “I hope that the entire European populace can unite for the wonderful game we are engaged in and support their respective teams.”
The authorities have labeled England’s first match as a “high-risk” event, with supporters being provided with low-alcohol beverages within the stadium and prohibited from consuming alcohol in the seating areas.
Over 300,000 British fans are journeying to Germany for Euro 2024, marking the highest attendance since Euro 2016 in France.
The policing of the initial fixture has been further complicated by UEFA requesting removal of barriers within the stadium, seating both sets of supporters closer together, and allocating two-thirds of the tickets to integrated sections.
German police Chief Inspector Christof Burghardt previously expressed to Sky News: “I consider this a highly precarious match due to the historical context and the presence of hooligans on both sides.
“Serbia has a significant number of hooligans. The English fans, particularly when under the influence of alcohol, can be very confrontational. It has been quite a task to prepare for this, in the hope that nothing untoward occurs.”
Footballing deaths a ‘great shock’
During a joint press conference with captain Harry Kane, Southgate also commented on the recent passing of two footballing personalities – former Arsenal and Everton legend Kevin Campell and Millwall and Montenegro goalie Matija Sarkic.
Southgate expressed that the news of both individuals’ demise was met with astonishment and deep sorrow, especially acknowledging the emotional impact on England players who had connections with Sarkic.
