A cold period has commenced across the UK, heightening the likelihood of wintry conditions such as snow and ice.
The Met Office indicates that a chillier easterly pattern will establish itself across the nation from Friday into the weekend.
Is snowfall expected?
Paul Gundersen, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: “While certain regions may experience showers or light rain on Friday and over the weekend, there exists the possibility of sleet or snow as temperatures decrease, primarily over elevated terrain in central and southern regions. The cold will be intensified at times by brisk easterly winds.
“There will be fluctuating and at times considerable amounts of cloud cover in the forthcoming days, with the clearest and sunniest conditions anticipated in the northwest of the UK. Additionally, icy patches and overnight frost can be expected in some areas.”
Cold health warnings issued
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released yellow cold health warnings for the North East of England, the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as the South East, effective from 9am on February 7 until 9am on February 11.
