The 27-year-old made his way to the Riverside Stadium during the summer on a loan arrangement, with his prospects of consistent Premier League involvement appearing limited.
Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, he has been a regular presence, starting in 20 league matches and aiding the club’s pursuit of a top-six finish.
Recently, Ipswich opted to invoke their right to recall him from his loan spell, but Edmundson has swiftly made his return.
The previous defender for Rangers and Derby County has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.
In an official announcement, Boro stated: “Centre-back George Edmundson has officially joined the club permanently. The 27-year-old was on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town before being recalled earlier this week.
“However, an agreement has been reached between the two clubs for George to join Boro on a permanent basis, and he has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.
“George has made 21 appearances for the club so far this season before his recall midweek.”
“Already familiar to Boro fans, the Manchester-born player will bring substantial competition to the defense.
“He is a two-time promotion victor, having played a crucial role in Ipswich’s return to the Championship, as well as featuring 10 times in their promotion season back to the Premier League.”
Edmundson joins fellow defender Ryan Giles and former England youth international winger Morgan Whittaker in making moves to the Riverside.
