The foreign secretary urged individuals to “adhere to the regulations” of other nations when questioned about an 18-year-old British citizen who has been sentenced to a year in prison in Dubai.
Marcus Fakana, hailing from Mr. Lammy’s Tottenham area, experienced a “holiday romance” with a 17-year-old girl while vacationing with his family in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The girl, who also resides in London, is now 18 years old.
However, following remarks from the campaign organization Detained In Dubai that decried his treatment as a “disgrace,” the foreign secretary David Lammy responded that he has received “all the support available” from officials in the UK.
“No matter where you are globally, it is prudent to follow the rules and laws of that nation, which is why the Foreign Office clarifies the regulations on its website,” he stated.
According to Detained In Dubai, Fakana has felt forsaken by the British government since his apprehension in September.
He mentioned that the couple kept their relationship hidden from the girl’s family “due to their strictness” and had hoped to continue their romance upon returning to the UK.
Unfortunately, he recounted that law enforcement arrived at his family’s hotel and took him into custody without providing any rationale.

Detained In Dubai reported that Fakana was arrested and charged after the girl’s mother discovered their conversations and photographs when they returned to the UK and subsequently alerted the Dubai police.
While staying in temporary accommodations on bail, Fakana expressed to Detained in Dubai earlier this week that he and his family are “heartbroken and in disbelief”.
“I never meant to violate the law. It didn’t cross my mind at the time and for that, I extend my apologies. I am beseeching His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum to kindly forgive and absolve me.
“Allow me to return home. Please restore my life,” he implored, as reported by the BBC.
In Dubai, the legal age of consent is 18 and is strictly upheld.
“According to UAE legislation, the girl is regarded as a minor, and following internationally recognized procedures, her mother – as the legal guardian – lodged the complaint,” stated the prosecutors in a prior announcement.
“Dubai’s judiciary is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all individuals and ensuring fair judicial processes.”
Fakana is anticipated to file an appeal against the ruling.
