Christmas with the Greens: Yorkshire farming pair return for festive Yorkshire Vet special on Channel 5 with Peter Wright
The Yorkshire Vet chronicles the excitement, joy, and emotions as a team of urban and rural vets from four different practices throughout the region assist animals of diverse kinds.
Christopher Timothy, renowned for his portrayal of the iconic vet, James Herriot, lends his voice to narrate the series.
Peter Wright, who received training in Thirsk from Herriot himself, boasts over 40 years of expertise in treating a wide variety of animals.
After departing from Skeldale Veterinary Centre, the original practice of his former boss, he now operates from Grace Lane Vets in Kirkbymoorside, situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.
The festive special titled Christmas with the Greens features Britain’s oldest farming couple, Steve and Jean Green, as they commemorate Steve’s 80th Christmas on their family farm.
Though he is not as agile as he once was, Peter is dedicated to ensuring that this festive season is their most memorable by assisting with various preparations.
Peter contributes by selecting a Christmas tree, decorating, and shopping, although he leaves the culinary duties with Jean to his wife Lin.
He even assists Steve and Jean in crafting their own crackers and creating a unique festive card (using a green screen) as these three long-time friends reflect on past Christmases, enjoy the present, and anticipate the future.
The previous season of The Yorkshire Vet: At Home With The Greens was highly favored by viewers. Peter expressed his thoughts to The Yorkshire Post about the forthcoming Christmas special.
“The Greens are incredibly popular; they’ve made a name for themselves on The Yorkshire Vet, and as a result, Channel 5, understandably, wanted to showcase special episodes titled The Greens at Home,” Peter remarked.
“I believe the Greens’ rapport with the audience stems partly from their simple lifestyle.
“They may not possess wealth, but that doesn’t trouble them. I believe it illustrates that the material possessions many cling to today do not guarantee happiness. I don’t think they do.
“Many people aspire to that uncomplicated way of living. The evidence lies in the fact that urban dwellers, who often experience significant stress and pressure, seek refuge in the countryside.”
“In our fast-paced world, everyone faces substantial pressure and stress, leading busy lives filled with commutes. They switch on the television and see the Greens tackling challenges and caring for livestock; they appear utterly unburdened.”
Peter relished the experience of filming the episode.
“It’s safe to say that Lin and I found great enjoyment in creating this because they are excellent company,” he stated.
“Steve may not speak extensively, but he possesses a keen intellect. In some ways, he embodies the true essence of a Yorkshire farmer; speaks little yet thinks deeply.”
“They asked if Lin and I could assist them in preparing for Christmas, which provided us the chance to engage in various activities that viewers will find quite intriguing.”
The Green’s rural lifestyle and personalities resonate with the public, Peter noted.
“I think we are fortunate to reside where we do, in the picturesque North Yorkshire, where the countryside is stunning,” he mentioned.
“Neither they nor I take it for granted, and I believe that when individuals transition from urban to rural living, many discover something in life that was previously missing, despite all their material possessions.”
“It’s an amalgamation of factors that makes the Greens so captivating. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Jean Green is quite the character; she always has something to say.”
“At times, she can be quite direct in her opinions; she wouldn’t excel in a diplomatic capacity, but many find that very charming and relatable.”
The Yorkshire Vet has broad appeal, helping to unify families.
“Over the years, I’ve spoken to numerous fans and what I find particularly rewarding about The Yorkshire Vet is its ability to engage a diverse audience, from children as young as four to individuals in their nineties,” Peter noted.
“Its broad appeal is no coincidence; it offers a respite from the hectic lives people lead.
“If programs like ours foster family bonding, allowing them to relax and enjoy one of the shows together, then I believe it serves a very valuable purpose.”
