The most longstanding ride at Alton Towers is set to close after over four decades of service. The amusement park has announced this decision as part of its strategy to revamp the beloved tourist destination.
The Blade, which attracted over 500,000 visitors annually, has permanently shut its doors.
Initially known as Pirate Ship, this ride made its debut 44 years ago.
Its defining feature is the swinging motion that sends riders ‘through the air, back and forth,’ even allowing for a moment of weightlessness.
According to the Alton Towers website: ‘Float free from your seat and let your stomach drift somewhere above you.’
As it oscillates back and forth, this pendulum swing reaches almost vertical positions.
The operators of this celebrated theme park have stated that the retirement of one of its most cherished rides coincides with an overhaul of its ride and attraction offerings.
A spokesperson for Alton Towers remarked: ‘As it reaches the end of its technical lifespan, the Resort will bid farewell to its oldest attraction, The Blade, which will be retired after 44 memorable years.’
This announcement has left thrill-seekers feeling ‘devastated.’
One enthusiast expressed: ‘The Blade will always be the legendary Pirate Ship; it will be sorely missed.’
However, this isn’t the only attraction at Alton Towers that guests are parting ways with this year.
The theme park revealed the closure of its spa in January, after more than two decades of operation.
The facility offered a variety of aquatic experiences, including a swimming pool, whirlpool, jacuzzi, Edwardian sauna, and steam room.
Previously, Alton Towers indicated that this challenging choice was ‘crucial for the forthcoming growth and advancement of the resort.’
Additionally, two more attractions, Flavio’s Fabulous Fandango and the Alton Towers Dungeon, will remain permanently closed when the park reopens in March 2025.
A representative for the theme park further noted: ‘Assessing our lineup of attractions is a continual process that takes place at the conclusion of each season, with ongoing reinvestment in our premier rides and attractions always being a priority as we aim to provide unforgettable experiences for everyone visiting our Resort.’
‘With the Phalanx having exhausted the potential of its swinging blade, they are dedicated to introducing a new element to Forbidden Valley, set for 2025.’
Upon the park’s reopening next year, the new Alton Towers Project Ocean will be fully operational.
This new 18-meter attraction will take the place of the current Funk n Fly ride, as outlined in the plans.
