Gary Lineker has expressed that it is “the appropriate moment” to depart from Match Of The Day and suggested the BBC may alter the structure of the Premier League highlights program.
The 63-year-old will conclude his role as host at the season’s end and characterized his tenure on the show as an “absolute delight and honor”.
On his podcast, The Rest Is Football, he remarked: “It has been an absolute delight and honor to present such a legendary program for the BBC.”

Lineker went on to mention that the broadcaster will enter a new three-year agreement to present top-tier highlights, and staying on for another year “would be somewhat peculiar”.
“I believe the upcoming contract will see Match Of The Day approached in a slightly different manner, so it makes sense for someone new to take the lead.”
“I exited my football career when I sensed it was the right moment. I believe this is now the right moment.”
Lineker declined to speculate on who will take over his position, amidst growing speculation regarding Mark Chapman, the regular Match Of The Day 2 presenter, Football Focus host Alex Scott, and BBC sport coverage presenter Gabby Logan.
“Clearly I have no idea who it will be, and I would never publicly state my preference, as I don’t think that would be appropriate – but whoever it is, my advice would be to be yourself,” he stated.
“I had to step into the substantial shoes of the distinguished Des Lynam.”
“…I would advise simply being yourself and savoring the experience; it’s a fantastic program to be involved with. It was exceptional before my tenure began, and it will continue to be exceptional after my departure.”
Lineker has been the host of Match Of The Day since 1999 and will have been in charge of the show for over 25 years when he exits in May 2025.
He will continue with the MOTD Top Ten podcast in addition to his podcast, which also includes contributions from BBC pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

The former England forward has held the title of the BBC’s highest-paid on-air personality for seven successive years, with an estimated earning of £1.35m in the year 2023/24.
The BBC indicated that future developments for Match Of The Day would be “revealed in due course”.
