The host of Prince William’s Earthshot Awards has expressed that he’s been “in tears all day” in light of Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.
Billy Porter, the acclaimed Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning actor and vocalist, spoke to Sky News prior to presenting William’s environmental accolade ceremony taking place in Cape Town.
He shared that he felt “terrible” in the aftermath of the electoral outcome and found it difficult to comprehend the result.
He remarked: “America has made its choice, everything is now evident… good luck to you all, I’m here, putting on a brave face, we’ll press ahead, that’s all I can say, I do not have any explanations.”
“There’s no more concealment, no further justifications, everyone was aware and they opted for this [Donald Trump], so we shall observe. I have no solutions to offer.”
A passionate advocate for Kamala Harris, he urged his two million Instagram followers before the election, emphasizing that Americans needed to determine if they desired “democracy or not”.
President-elect Trump has gained notoriety as a climate change skeptic.
Prince William’s Earthshot Awards have been referred to as the Oscars for environmental achievements.
These awards acknowledge and celebrate innovative efforts to address some of the most urgent environmental challenges worldwide.
William made his entrance on the green carpet clad in a black and white coat purchased from a marketplace in London and environmentally friendly sneakers produced by Purified Shoes, which are entirely plastic-free and biodegradable.
During his address, presented to a live television audience, he urged everyone to engage with the Earthshot “movement”.
The prince stated that the Earthshot Prize “is not merely a celebration of victors. It’s a collective movement for transformation”.
He invited his audience “to partake in the movement for environmental innovation taking place globally. Because that’s the reason we are gathered here: to champion the dreamers, the thinkers, and the innovators from all backgrounds who aspire to create a better, more sustainable future”.
