The largest captive crocodile globally has passed away in Australia.
It was estimated that he exceeded 110 years in age.
Cassius, measuring 5.48 meters (18 feet), was also over a ton in weight.
He had resided in a wildlife sanctuary situated on Green Island, adjacent to the Queensland tourist destination of Cairns in Australia for over 37 years, as indicated by a post on the sanctuary’s Facebook page.
The Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat mentioned that his health had been deteriorating since October 15.
Sharing a nostalgic photo of Cassius relishing a meal during his prime, they expressed: “He was very aged and believed to be living beyond the average lifespan of a wild crocodile.”
Cassius hailed from the neighboring Northern Territory, where crocodiles play an essential role in the area’s tourism sector, as per the post.
“Cassius will be profoundly missed, yet our affection and memories of him will forever remain in our hearts,” it concluded.
A saltwater crocodile, Cassius had held the prestigious Guinness World Records title as the largest crocodile in captivity.
He obtained this title following the passing of the Philippine crocodile Lolong in 2013, who measured 6.17 meters long (20 feet 3 inches), as stated in the annual reference publication.
