The trial of Gerard Depardieu is scheduled to commence in Paris today on allegations of sexually assaulting two women; however, the renowned French actor will be absent from court due to health issues, as announced.
The court proceedings will take place, but the questioning of the defendant and the ruling are set to be deferred to a later date.
Depardieu, celebrated for his appearances in over 200 films, is regarded as a symbol of French cinema. He is accused of assaulting both women during the production of the film Les Volets Verts in 2021.
If found guilty, he may face imprisonment for a duration of up to five years, although it is more probable that he would receive a combination of a suspended sentence alongside a significant monetary penalty.
Depardieu has rejected the accusations, asserting that he has never “abused a woman.” He has received backing from a group of actors and filmmakers, who stated that an attack on Depardieu signifies “an assault on art itself.”
This trial is viewed as a pivotal moment for the expanding MeToo movement in France.
MeToo, which gained notable attention in the United States during the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault case, aims to illuminate sexual violence against women and advocate for increased action from authorities. The movement has frequently highlighted sectors such as filmmaking, industries historically dominated by men, where sexual abuse has often been overlooked.
President Emmanuel Macron referred to the actor as “the pride of France,” eliciting a fierce backlash from activists who accused him of undermining efforts to safeguard women against violence.
The French actress Lea Seydoux, recognized for her role in the Bond film No Time to Die, labeled Mr. Macron’s remarks as “crazy,” expressing that “it gives a very negative image of our nation.”

Depardieu has long been known for his lifestyle characterized by excess and indulgence, with fans celebrating him as a free spirit. Nonetheless, his popularity has waned recently, as he faces an increasing number of allegations regarding inappropriate behavior.
The 75-year-old is expected to encounter another trial next year after being charged with raping actress Charlotte Arnould twice at his residence in Paris.
