Elle Macpherson has disclosed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago – yet opted against chemotherapy or conventional medical treatment.
The supermodel, now 60 years old, expressed her desire to adopt a holistic strategy for combating the illness, while recognizing that this approach may not be suitable for everyone.
In a conversation with The Australian Women’s Weekly, Macpherson described the moment she learned about her cancer diagnosis as “a shock, unexpected, confusing, and daunting in numerous aspects”.
She opted to keep her battle with the disease private and took the time to explore her treatment alternatives.
As reported by the magazine, Macpherson was diagnosed with HER2 positive estrogen-receptive intraductal carcinoma following a lumpectomy. The physician allegedly recommended a mastectomy accompanied by radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and breast reconstruction.
Nonetheless, the Australian star, who has chronicled her journey in a newly released book bearing her name, stated that after considerable contemplation – having consulted with 32 doctors and specialists – she chose to forgo chemotherapy.
Instead, she embraced “an intuitive, heart-led, holistic approach,” working under the guidance of a primary physician specializing in integrative medicine, which included a combination of therapies and lifestyle modifications.

Macpherson, the founder of the wellness brand WelleCo, acknowledged that her approach may not be ideal for everyone. “I realized there are no absolutes and certainly no guarantees,” she reportedly mentions in her book. “There was no ‘right’ way, only the right way for me.”
Opting out of medical treatment was “the most challenging decision I’ve ever made in my life,” she wrote – but “ignoring my own inner guidance would have been even more difficult”.
The star revealed to the magazine that she dedicated eight months in solitude at a residence in Phoenix, Arizona, under the supervision of various professionals, “channeling all her energy into healing herself”.
Regarding her present health condition, she stated that “in traditional terms, they might say I’m in clinical remission, but I would assert that I am in complete wellness.”
She mentioned her intention was not to dispense “advice to others,” but rather to share “what I have learned from my own real-life experiences”.
Macpherson soared to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s, gracing the cover of the Sports Illustrated magazine’s annual swimsuit edition – an achievement she accomplished a remarkable five times.
The star, affectionately dubbed The Body, is a mother to two sons with her former partner, Arpad Busson.
