The United Kingdom is gearing up for their initial encounter with Monkeypox after the World Health Organization announced the global emergency status of the virus spread.
Sweden has become the pioneer in confirming a case of Clade 1 monkeypox outside of Africa, where the virus has claimed the lives of over 500 individuals.
Although the risk to UK residents is minimal, authorities have affirmed their readiness for a possible severe outbreak.
Dr. Meera Chand, Deputy Director of UKHSA, commented, “The current risk to the UK population is deemed low.
“Nevertheless, preparations are in progress to handle any potential cases in the UK.
“This includes ensuring that healthcare professionals are adequately informed to promptly identify cases, that rapid testing is accessible, and that protocols are established for the safe medical management of infected individuals and to prevent further spread of the virus.”
