A boy of four years succumbed to sepsis after being released from the hospital on three separate occasions in the week preceding his demise, as voiced by his grieving parents.
At 44 years of age, mother Lindita Alushi and father, Kastriot Klosi, aged 50, mentioned that doctors instructed them to manage their son Daniel with Calpol and Ibuprofen during two of their visits.
Upon their fourth visit to the Royal Free Hospital in Camden, London, Daniel was finally admitted, but unfortunately, he succumbed to sepsis just a few hours later.
More than a year following his passing, Lindita and Kastriot anticipate that the inquest commencing tomorrow will offer them crucial insights.
Lindita, a pharmacy assistant and recognized physician in her homeland of Albania, expressed that when Daniel breathed his last, their ‘family changed forever’.
She further conveyed, ‘Our days are filled with anguish, void, and grief. While time has progressed, for our family, it has stagnated due to the numerous unanswered queries surrounding Daniel’s fate.
‘Every day, we ponder if more measures could have been taken to rescue our little boy. We acknowledge that revisiting everything during the inquest will be exceptionally challenging, but it is a necessary step for us to honor our son and unearth the answers we’ve been seeking for over a year.’
Reflecting on her son, Lindita remarked, ‘Daniel was the most lovable little boy, and we were incredibly fortunate to have him as our son. He relished cooking and baking with me.
‘He adored animals, listening to tales, and playing with his companions.’
Initially, Daniel’s parents sought medical help at A&E on Sunday, March 26 last year, only to be sent home a short while later.
They revisited on the Thursday night, perturbed about his breathing. However, once again, physicians discharged them, and according to Lindita, this time they were counseled to provide Daniel with Calpol and ibuprofen.
On Saturday, April 1, the family revisited the hospital, and as recounted by Lindita, they were once more sent home with the same guidance.
Later that day, at approximately 4pm, they returned to the identical hospital. Daniel was admitted and succumbed to sepsis – a perilous ailment where the body attacks itself due to an infection – several hours later.
Expressing her turmoil, Lindita shared, ‘We persisted in taking him to the hospital and were genuinely troubled about his state, but nothing can brace you for hearing that your little boy has departed.’
Lucy Macklin, the legal representative handling the medical negligence aspect for the parents, remarked that processing Daniel’s passing and the events leading up to it has been ‘exceedingly challenging’ for Lindita and Kastriot.
She added, ‘Understandably, they continue to harbor numerous queries and apprehensions regarding the care their son received and Daniel’s passing.
‘While nothing can ever compensate for Daniel’s demise, we are resolute in supporting his dear ones so they can, at the very least, obtain the essential answers they are entitled to.
‘The inquest signifies a significant juncture in achieving this. Should any lapses in the care Daniel received come to light during the course of the hearing, it is imperative that constructive lessons are gleaned to enhance patient safety for others.’
A spokesperson from the Royal Free Hospital expressed, ‘We are profoundly saddened by Daniel’s demise and once more extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
‘We have conducted an inquiry into Daniel’s treatment, and the outcomes have been communicated to his family. We await the findings of the inquest.’
An inquest concerning Daniel’s passing will be conducted at Poplar Coroner’s Court and is anticipated to span approximately two days.
