Bridge Named in Honour of Football Legend Tommy Taylor
In a fitting tribute to one of Barnsley’s most iconic figures, a town centre bridge has been renamed in honour of football legend Tommy Taylor. Taylor was a member of the famed “Busby Babes” who tragically died in the Munich air disaster. The previously known Market Gate Bridge will now be called the Tommy Taylor Memorial Bridge.
This walkway, which crosses the railway towards Oakwell, the home of Barnsley FC, will serve as a lasting reminder of Taylor’s legacy in the town where he was born and rose to football stardom.
Tommy’s niece, Danni Blackley, 59, of Stairfoot, expressed her joy at the dedication, saying, “I am just so happy. This tribute honours my uncle and makes my mum, Irene, Tommy’s sister, proud. She would be over the moon if she knew this, and God willing, she’s watching on.”
The most recent bridge in the town centre of Barnsley is going to be called the Tommy Taylor Memorial Bridge as a tribute to the former footballer from Barnsley, Manchester United and England, who tragically lost his life in the Munich air disaster in 1958 when he was 26 years old.
