51 Officers Injured in Rotherham Hotel Riot, Police Confirm
South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that 51 officers were injured in the violent riot that erupted outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, on Sunday. The injuries sustained by the officers included broken bones, concussion, bruising, and head wounds.
The riot also saw injuries inflicted on police horses and dogs, with one horse forced into retirement due to a hoof injury, according to a police spokesperson.
During the “horrendous disorder,” frontline officers were targeted with a barrage of missiles, including concrete blocks, chairs, branches, fire extinguishers, glass bottles, and cans.
The force reported that officers unable to resume frontline duties due to injuries have joined the team, trawling through footage to gather evidence.
Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley expressed gratitude for the community’s support after the “horrific events.”
“I am so proud of our officers’ bravery and resilience on the night and now their ongoing dedication to helping our communities remain safe, coming back to work despite being subjected to such terrible levels of violence,” he said.
Hartley also issued a stern warning to those involved in the violence: “Please be assured that we are continuing our work to identify and arrest the offenders at our own pace. If you were involved in the outright acts of violence and thuggery on Sunday, let me be clear—we are coming for you. We are determined to arrest each of the offenders from their homes in the coming days.”
Law enforcement authorities have reported that the casualties consist of fractures and head injuries.
