Reports suggest that a nationwide cinema chain is set to eliminate numerous positions and close approximately 25 of its establishments.
Cineworld has been grappling with a substantial debt, leading to its filing for bankruptcy protection in 2022, as stated by Sky News.
This financial dilemma resulted in its removal from the London Stock Exchange in August, with the closures aimed at reducing operational expenses in the UK.
As part of ongoing negotiations with various commercial landlords in the UK, plans for restructuring involve the immediate closure of 12 venues, with the rest expected to shut down by the end of the summer. Additionally, efforts are being made to negotiate reduced rents for another 50 cinemas nationwide.
The challenges faced by Cineworld’s operations are believed to stem from the rise of streaming platforms, postponed releases due to industry disputes, and decreased demand from customers due to rising living costs.
Rumors suggest that other cinema operators may step in to take over some of the locations set for closure, although the specifics and timeline remain uncertain.
The chain has confirmed the closure of six venues: Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate, and Swindon Circus.
