In a sorrowful tribute, the family of a diver who vanished off the Dorset coast described her as “extroverted, affectionate, and devoted,” and stated they will cherish her forever.
Emily Sherwin, a 20-year-old, was last spotted on 23 July when she set out for a dive near Swanage’s Old Harry Rocks.
When she failed to resurface, authorities, along with HM Coastguard and the RNLI, engaged in extensive search operations for the young diver.
Additionally, a special dive team from Avon and Somerset Police scoured the location where she was last sighted.
Nevertheless, Ms. Sherwin remains unfound, and Dorset Police announced on Thursday evening that the underwater search for her had been terminated.
The family issued a statement expressing, “We are devastated by Emily’s passing but forever thankful for the marvelous 20 years we shared with her, taking solace in the fact that she was pursuing her passion.”
“Emily was exceptional: full of life, sociable, affectionate, and committed. She brought joy to every place she entered. Emily cherished the sea, adored sailing and diving, and was excitedly anticipating a promising career in marine conservation.”
“We extend our gratitude to all involved in the search for Emily: the RNLI and coastguard units, the police divers, and everyone at Parkstone Yacht Club who deployed over 30 boats to assist in the search.”
“The search effort was a tribute to the influence she had on everyone she encountered and the love we all hold for her.”
“Her absence will be everlasting.”

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Vallins, from Dorset Police, stated, “We are maintaining close communication with the family as our search continues, and our heartfelt condolences are with all those close to Emily during this challenging period.
“In collaboration with our partner organizations, we have extensively combed the area where Emily was diving over the past days, but sadly, she remains unlocated at this time.
“After consulting with maritime experts and thoroughly assessing the conditions and circumstances of this incident, we have made the decision to halt our underwater search operations.”
