Reviving an Iconic Franchise
For devoted fans of Beverly Hills Cop, concluding the Eddie Murphy-driven series after the third installment left much to be desired.
Even with a special appearance by Star Wars’ George Lucas, the absence of key character John Taggart and subpar reviews from enthusiasts marked a disappointing end.
A Nostalgic Reunion
In the long-awaited sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, John Ashton’s character makes a striking comeback adorned with a subtle reference to past missteps.
During an interview with Sky News, Judge Reinhold acknowledges the on-screen tribute alongside his colleague Ashton.
“Do you recall that line where [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] alludes to it? He mentions, ’94 wasn’t your best year’ in the film?
“I never caught that until I read it [in the script]. That’s amusing.”
The dynamic duo of John Taggart (portrayed by Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (played by Reinhold) reunite in this Netflix production.
A Rekindling of Old Charms
Revisiting a scene from the 1985 classic, this marked the first time Murphy, Reinhold, and Ashton shared the screen together since the sequel premiered in 1987.
“It was our first encounter in a long while. We were merely two blocks away from the original set in 1984. It was quite surreal,” Reinhold reminisces.
“Jerry Bruckheimer was present, as was the crew, and there was an unusual hush. It felt as though we had stepped out of their shared history or a novel because they were so young when they first witnessed it.”
Adding to this sentiment, Ashton reflects on the special ambiance felt by both the cast and crew.
“One crew member told me, ‘I was merely eight when the original released, and witnessing you guys back in action gives me goosebumps’.”
Fresh Faces in the Cast
Joining the ensemble cast are Joseph Gordon Levitt as Axel Foley’s new partner and Kevin Bacon portraying the antagonist, Captain Grant.
‘Embracing the Dark Side’
Bacon also embraces a villainous persona in his upcoming flick, Maxxxine, set to release shortly after Beverly Hills Cop.
“Both are incredibly enjoyable and strikingly distinct. I am lucky to have a profession where I can switch between being a suave, impeccably dressed, and charming cop in Beverly Hills Cop.
“Following that, I can transform into whatever character Maxxxine demands, someone scraped from the murky depths.”
“There is an element of catharsis in this process as we all harbor a bit of darkness within us.”
The original Beverly Hills Cop hit theaters just a year after Bacon’s breakthrough role in the Oscar-nominated Footloose.
Reflecting on Past and Present
Looking back, the American icon describes that period as a whirlwind experience.
‘Tears of Joy’
“My introduction to Beverly Hills was quite unique due to my role in Footloose.
“Before that, I might have visited California a few times, but Beverly Hills was a realm I observed from afar. After Footloose, people would take me out to dine in Beverly Hills – it felt like a whole new world.”
Transitioning to Beverly Hills Cop, Bacon praises Murphy’s comedic prowess.
“Recently, I stumbled upon one of his old comedy specials while on a flight.
“I tried not to disturb other passengers, but I couldn’t help tears of laughter streaming down my face.
“I realized once again that Eddie was an exceptional, still is an exceptional comedian. Because, when I collaborate with an actor, I focus on the scene. Naturally, he is hilarious.
“He will throw in improvisations, but my main focus is on engaging with him as an actor, not just a funnyman.”
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is now available for streaming on Netflix.
