During the Euro 2024 match against Austria, France’s captain Kylian Mbappe endured a broken nose. The incident occurred late in the game when the 25-year-old collided with Austrian defender Kevin Danso while vying for a header, resulting in a bloody face and shirt for Mbappe.
Mbappe, a prominent figure at the tournament, had earlier contributed to the only goal of the game and missed an opportunity to score a second. The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed that Mbappe sustained a broken nose and would need a protective mask. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays via ambulance.
Manager Didier Deschamps, in a post-match press conference, characterized Mbappe’s injury as severe, stating, “It’s very unfortunate news for us tonight.”
Deschamps expressed concerns about the team’s future without Mbappe, emphasizing the significance of his presence. “The French team, with or without him, is not the same. I hope he can recover in time,” he added.
The injury comes as a setback for France, who are scheduled to play against the Netherlands next.
Fortunately, this mishap does not spell the end of Mbappe’s involvement in the tournament.
‘Need Suggestions for Masks!’
In a light-hearted approach, Mbappe questioned his followers on social media, with 14 million followers, for suggestions on masks. The FFF stated that the protective mask would enable Mbappe to potentially resume playing after receiving proper treatment. Immediate surgery is not currently planned for him.
In other Euro 2024 developments, Belgium, a favorite, started their campaign with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Slovakia.
Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz skillfully scored a goal into the far corner from a difficult angle – a play that withstood a thorough VAR assessment.
Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku – the top goal scorer for Belgium – seemed to express regret to fans after having two potential equalizing goals overturned following VAR scrutiny.
