Incident Details
In a recent court hearing at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court, it was revealed that a TikTok prankster, known as Mizzy but legally named Bacari-Bronze O’Garro, committed a theft by snatching a woman’s £1,000 iPhone while she was using it in central London. The incident occurred on 15 June 2022 while Mizzy was riding a Lime e-bike.
Police officers noticed Mizzy’s suspicious behavior while cycling and chased him down after the theft. He was arrested in April and subsequently found guilty of the theft.
Sentencing and Order
During the sentencing, Judge Michael Oliver imposed a 12-month community order on Mizzy, who is now 19 years old. Additionally, Mizzy was directed to pay £500 in compensation to the victim. The community order mandates Mizzy to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and participate in 15 days of rehabilitation activity. Judge Oliver stated that the sentence aims to both penalize Mizzy and make amends to the community.
Victim Impact
The victim, Ruby Hewitt, expressed feeling “stressed, anxious, and quite scared for my safety” following the incident on Highbury New Park in Islington, North London.
Police Chase and Arrest
Though not witnessing the theft, three Metropolitan Police officers in an unmarked car grew suspicious of Mizzy due to his erratic behavior. When confronted, Mizzy attempted to flee, discarding the stolen phone in a bush. He then tried to escape on foot but was eventually apprehended by the officers.
Legal Proceedings and Rehabilitation
Mizzy’s lawyer, Keren Weekes, highlighted the negative impact of his previous time in a young offenders institution on his mental health. She mentioned Mizzy’s current efforts to positively contribute to society, including undertaking internships and a vocational qualification in creative media. Mizzy is actively involved in producing an anti-knife crime video as part of his internship activities.
At the time of the theft, Mizzy had three prior convictions and was also sentenced for a separate robbery incident in July 2022.
