Heartbroken Nottingham Mother Refuses to Read Letter from Murderer’s Family
The mother of a victim stabbed to death in Nottingham a year ago has opened up about how she cannot bring herself to open a letter sent to her by Valdo Calocane’s family, the man responsible for the killings.
Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar tragically lost their lives in a brutal assault as they made their way home after a night out on June 13 last year.
Both 19-year-olds perished at the scene of the attack before Calocane went on to harm 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates, steal his van, and use it in an attempt to harm three pedestrians.
In a united statement, the families of the three victims expressed their intention to pause today to honor the memories of the “three vibrant, caring, hard-working, and much-loved family members who are no longer with us.”
They also reiterated their belief that Calocane escaped true justice due to what they deemed a deficient investigation and prosecution process, overly relying on doctors’ testimonies and outdated laws surrounding diminished responsibility.
Accepting his guilty pleas to manslaughter, prosecutors acknowledged his condition of paranoid schizophrenia as concluded by various psychiatrists.
On the eve of her son’s death anniversary, Emma Webber confessed she cannot find the strength to confront the letter sent by the killer’s family that reportedly shifts blame onto authorities and agencies rather than taking accountability themselves.
Speaking to the Mirror, she voiced her lack of sympathy for Calocane’s family, highlighting that his mother still has her son alive, contrasting the irrecoverable loss she experiences.
Expressing her strong emotions, she stated, ‘I wouldn’t trust myself to be near them at the moment. I don’t want to look into the faces of the people that brought this monster into the world.’
Mrs. Webber also revealed that she believes Barnaby and Grace shared a relationship of some kind, with Grace courageously stepping in to protect Barnaby during the attack, potentially warranting her posthumously receiving the George Cross for her valor.
She described Grace as her hero, emphasizing her immense bravery in the face of danger.
