Building Heroes is a nationwide charity aimed at empowering military veterans and individuals departing from service with the necessary skills, training, and support for successful careers in construction. Through specialized training programs offered in partnership with further education training providers and leading employers and developers, the organization connects the Armed Forces with educational opportunities and the construction industry, ensuring veterans acquire essential skills and support to forge thriving careers while simultaneously addressing workforce deficits in the sector.
The site visit was crafted to provide hands-on insights into the construction industry, enabling learners to observe their acquired skills in practice while discovering the various career prospects available within the sector. From grasping health and safety regulations to witnessing cutting-edge techniques such as timber framing with pre-installed insulation and sustainable methodologies like solar panel installation and air source heat pumps, the day offered a thorough introduction to contemporary construction practices and standards.

John Leary, Major Projects Director, along with Robert Adams, Regional Managing Director at Lovell, provided an informative presentation regarding the collaboration between Lovell and the Armed Forces community. They underscored the company’s commitment to assisting veterans and service members through initiatives such as Building Heroes. The presentation also spotlighted the various roles integral to the realization of a development project, exemplifying the collaborative effort and expertise that characterize the construction industry.
After the briefing, the participants engaged in a guided exploration of the site, observing construction processes at various stages and interacting with Lovell staff and subcontractors in critical trades like masonry, groundwork, electrical work, and painting. The learners were provided the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their career ambitions during an engaging Q&A session, which ensured they departed with a clearer understanding of the career pathways available to them.
