A man has tragically passed away after ‘actively resisting’ authorities during an incident related to an assault on a child in south London.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence on High Street, South Norwood, following alerts about a child allegedly in peril.
Upon arrival, they found a 45-year-old man in distress due to a medical emergency.
The Metropolitan Police indicated in a statement that he appeared to be ‘extremely agitated’ and was ‘actively resisting’ the officers.
This necessitated physical restraint, during which he became unresponsive. Paramedics were called to the scene soon after 1:30 AM today.
He was taken to an ambulance but experienced a severe deterioration in his health, as reported by the Met. Despite the medical team’s endeavors, he ultimately succumbed in the hospital.
In accordance with protocol following any fatality or significant injury stemming from police engagement, a report has been filed with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Commander Andy Brittain, overseeing the response to this event, expressed: ‘Our condolences go to the family of the deceased man. We will guarantee they are well-supported.’
‘I understand that the community in South Norwood will seek assurances that the situation was managed appropriately. The IOPC is undertaking an inquiry to provide that independent evaluation.’
‘We must also recognize the repercussions that such events have on the officers involved.’
‘In this instance, they were reacting to an emergency involving a child in distress and were confronted with a highly challenging situation upon their arrival.’
‘No officer desires to be part of an event resulting in a loss of life, and we will ensure they receive all necessary support.’
The Met has yet to release the identity of the victim or additional details concerning the child involved.
