The Bishop of Liverpool has declared his intention to retire just days after being confronted with misconduct allegations from two women, one of whom is a fellow bishop.
One individual claimed that the Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath kissed her without permission and engaged in inappropriate touching, while the other alleged sexual harassment.
The bishop has firmly repudiated the charges – and in his retirement announcement released online this afternoon, he reiterates his denial.
The announcement, issued by the Diocese of Liverpool, states: “Having sought permission from His Majesty the King, I have decided to retire from active ministry within the Church of England.”
In response to the claims, he remarked: “Since these allegations surfaced, I have consistently asserted that I have done nothing wrong and I maintain that stance.
“I do not want this situation to detract from the remarkable diocese and its congregation, which I have found to be an honor and joy to serve,” he expressed in his letter.
“This is not a resignation due to any fault or acknowledgment of liability.”
The specific date for the bishop’s official departure is yet to be finalized, but he is stepping back from ministerial duties and leading the diocese as of today.
The letter further states: “I have made this choice for my personal well-being, for my family’s sake, and in the best interests of the Diocese.
“I have informed the Archbishop of York regarding my decision, and I understand that he will arrange for episcopal oversight of the diocese for the duration of my tenure and throughout the vacancy,” he noted.
The accusations were initially reported by Channel 4 earlier this week, leading to significant pressure on the bishop to resign, with senior church officials in Liverpool deeming his position “untenable”.
A letter signed by six individuals, including the Dean of Liverpool, Sue Jones, was published earlier this week.
It stated: “After consulting with clergy, congregants, and staff at the diocesan offices and cathedral, it is with profound regret that the senior leadership of the Diocese of Liverpool believes the position of the Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath is currently untenable.”
The group also urged for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations made by the female bishop.
