West Brom presented with transfer chance as ex-Barnsley and Sheffield United player makes honest remark
This August will mark a decade since Everton acquired Holgate from Barnsley in a transfer valued at around £2m.
He is still listed as a club member; however, he has seen his standing decrease at Goodison Park in the past few seasons.
His contract is set to conclude in the summer, coinciding with the termination of his loan at West Brom.
In an interview with SportsBoom, Holgate conveyed his hope of continuing with the Baggies.
He stated: “Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to remain here and achieve promotion [to the Premier League].”
“That’s the perfect scenario for me, but if it doesn’t happen, I simply wish to enjoy playing consistent football; it’s particularly challenging when you’re not getting game time.”
Holgate, a veteran international for Jamaica, was highly regarded for his potential during his early career at Barnsley.
His advancement has slowed in recent years, marred by injuries affecting the Doncaster-born defender. Loan stints at Southampton and Sheffield United did little to rejuvenate his career, yet he has been a regular feature for West Brom this season.
Although Sheffield Wednesday had shown interest in the former Blade, it was West Brom that finalized a loan arrangement in the final moments of the summer transfer window.
He reflected: “The past couple of years have been somewhat challenging for me personally. I’ve dealt with numerous injuries; I tore my ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] two years ago and upon my return, I hardly played, which led me to go on loan last year.
“Sadly, my loan at Southampton did not go as expected, and then I joined Sheffield United in January, which was tough due to the club’s circumstances and the team’s lack of confidence.
“We were not winning many matches and were conceding a significant number of goals; as a defender, allowing so many goals often leads to criticism coming your way.”
