Numerous individuals have sustained injuries, some critically, in a ski lift mishap in Spain, as reported by local news outlets.
The occurrence happened at the Astún ski area, located along the Spanish-French border in the Pyrenees mountain range.
At least 30 individuals have suffered injuries during the event. Nine of them are reported to be in critical condition, and eight others are seriously hurt, according to regional media.
The reason behind the incident remains undetermined.
Footage disseminated across social media platforms seemed to depict people lying on the ground. A helicopter was also noted to have landed at the resort.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his dismay, stating he was “appalled by the news of the mishap.”
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with the injured and their loved ones,” he conveyed.
Jorge Azcón, President of the Aragon government, indicated he had received updates regarding the incident and was en route to the site.
Prime Minister Sánchez added that he had communicated with Mr. Azcón “to extend the government’s complete support.”
A dedicated hotline has been established for the families of those impacted.
Jaime Pelegrí, a commercial director at Spotify, posted on X: “Accident in Astún. The Canal Roya chairlift has collapsed. Fortunately, we are safe, but there are injured persons, and we have observed several stretchers being brought down.”
