Millions of train users have been alerted to significant disruptions along the West Coast Main Line route.
If you have ever journeyed between London Euston, northern England, and Scotland, there is a high likelihood that you’ve boarded a train that utilizes this crucial line.
This line interlinks London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Edinburgh and is serviced by nine distinct passenger train operators alongside freight companies. Therefore, any closures – even those that are planned – will disrupt millions of journeys.
Currently, Network Rail, the entity responsible for the railway infrastructure in the UK, has indicated that it must perform ‘disruptive’ work, which is anticipated to commence next year.
Which stations will be affected?
Network Rail is expected to shut certain portions of the route in blocks that will last for weeks at a time.
Stations along the route anticipated to be impacted include Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan, Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, and Carlisle.
Sources within the industry have disclosed that the line will be closed to trains over three two-week blocks annually from 2026 to 2028.
In total, the West Coast Main Line connects 46 stations.
While the specifics of the closures are yet to be finalized, engineers are expected to initiate a substantial project to replace more than 150 miles of overhead wiring that dates back to the 1970s.
As part of these efforts, the signaling equipment will be upgraded alongside track improvements, as reported by The Times.
Chris Coleman, the industry program director for the north at Network Rail, informed Metro: ‘Trilink is an industry-wide initiative designed to introduce digital signaling to the west coast mainline while also renewing tracks and overhead line equipment that are at the end of their operational lifespan.

‘Disruptive access will be essential to implement this work, and we will consult with the broader industry to reach an agreement in the upcoming months.
‘The program is currently in a preliminary stage, and efforts to fine-tune the delivery timeline and confirm costs are ongoing.’
Avanti West Coast has reportedly mentioned that it is too premature to ascertain the impacts of the works on its timetable.
This announcement comes just weeks after the initial train operators to undergo renationalization were unveiled as part of the government’s reform of UK rail services and the establishment of Great British Railways.
Network Rail conducted significant works on the West Coast Main Line from December 24 to January 2. Passengers were advised to refrain from traveling during the holiday season as the rail enhancements disrupted services to and from London Euston. This recent round of works concluded on January 4.
