Two individuals plunged through the ice while attempting to rescue their pets from an icy pond in Warwickshire.
What began as a routine dog stroll escalated into a coordinated rescue operation in Bedworth on Saturday, as a man and a woman found themselves trapped.
One individual stepped onto the ice at Sidings Pool with the intention of saving their dogs.
Upon falling into the water, the other person ventured out to assist them, resulting in both being stranded for 20 minutes.
Fortunately, passersby in the vicinity witnessed their fall and promptly called 999.
A collaborative effort from police, firefighters, and paramedics ensued, utilizing life buoys, life rings, and throw lines to bring them to safety.
The duo had been submerged in the frigid water for such an extended period that they required treatment for hypothermia and were subsequently taken to the hospital.
Both dogs emerged from the incident apparently unscathed, having been kept warm at the scene.
This occurrence prompted the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service to issue a caution: ‘It acts as a vital reminder of the dangers accompanying icy conditions.
‘Pet owners are encouraged to refrain from allowing their pets onto frozen surfaces, to keep them on a leash, and not to enter the water themselves if their pets encounter difficulties. Instead, reach out to the emergency services by calling 999.
‘It is essential to prioritize the safety of both pets and their owners, as attempts at personal rescue can result in tragic outcomes.
‘We strongly advise all community members to adopt a cautious approach during cold weather and to ensure their safety as well as that of their pets.’
