The sector is preparing for a significant downturn in sales during the initial month of 2024, as 21 percent of adults intend to forgo alcohol.
Over a third (36 percent) have decided to steer clear of the pub during this time, as they’re keen on ‘being responsible’ – concentrating on health and fitness aspirations and attempting to adhere to ‘Dry January’.
This initiative follows reports indicating that more than 400 pubs permanently closed in 2024, resulting in the number of pubs in the UK dipping below 39,000 for the first time since records began.
In response, the former Eastenders star renowned for his portrayal of Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, is giving his backing to the ‘Pack Our Pubs’ campaign.
This initiative will provide complimentary pints of crisps to patrons who order non-alcoholic beverages at 200 pubs across the UK throughout January.
He collaborated with Walkers, producers of the Better For You range of snacks, to offer crisp pints at The Chancellors, situated on the aptly named Crisp Road in Hammersmith, London.
The 47-year-old remarked: “The neighborhood pub plays a vital role in keeping the community united.
“For certain establishments, January can be particularly challenging and may prove to be the breaking point.
“How heart-wrenching would it be if your local establishment had to shut its doors?
“Kudos to those taking on the Dry January challenge this year; it’s a commendable step for your health – both mental and physical.
“However, you can still enjoy nights out with your friends at the local even if you’re abstaining from alcohol.”

UK pub numbers have dropped below 39,000 for the first time on record
The primary motivations for individuals participating in Dry January include enhancing physical health (47 percent), saving money (37 percent), and beginning the year with a positive habit (36 percent).
Additionally, 24 percent are motivated by a desire to test their personal self-discipline and see if they can accomplish it.
The same percentage believes that a broader range of non-alcoholic options in pubs would facilitate abstaining from alcohol while there, while 18 percent stated that healthier snack choices would help them avoid drinking at the pub.
Furthermore, 14 percent expressed a desire for events designed for non-drinkers, along with positive messaging about sobriety.
More than 70 percent (71 percent) have successfully visited the pub in the past while adhering to non-alcoholic drink selections – though 25 percent believe they have never managed to do so.
A substantial 76 percent assert that it is entirely feasible to enjoy a visit to the pub without involving alcohol.
The study conducted by OnePoll.com also revealed that 73 percent have set health-related resolutions in January, aiming for healthier eating habits and reduced alcohol intake.
Nonetheless, barriers such as lack of motivation (34 percent), stress or anxiety (31 percent), and cravings or entrenched habits (31 percent) often hinder them from achieving these objectives, while 18 percent also cite unrealistic expectations as an obstacle.
Cynthia Finke, a representative for Walkers, which commissioned the study, commented: “No one needs to forfeit the pleasures they cherish in January – including snacks. Sticking to your goals is much more achievable when you can have fun simultaneously. Supporting the pub industry is an added benefit.”
