The leading bidder at a fish market auction in Tokyo has disbursed over one million pounds for a tuna.
The 276kg bluefin tuna – roughly comparable to the dimensions and weight of a motorcycle – was purchased for 207 million yen (£1.05 million) at the Toyosu Fish Market.
The victorious bid was submitted by the Michelin-starred sushi chefs of the Onodera Group in partnership with wholesaler Yamayuki.
This amount marks the second highest ever expended at the market’s inaugural auction of the year and represents the fifth consecutive year that the purchasers have invested the premium price.
The record for the highest tuna price remains at 333.6 million yen (£1.7 million), paid by restaurant proprietor Kiyoshi Kimura in 2019 for a 278kg bluefin.
The Onodera Group announced that the most recent catch, procured from waters near the northern locale of Oma, will be showcased at establishments nationwide.
The buyers noted that the considerable amount was invested to obtain the tuna because its “unparalleled freshness was remarkable”, as reported by The Japan Times.
In another record-setting sale, approximately 350g of Hokkaido sea urchins fetched 7 million yen (£35,500).
