Luke Littler has shared his thoughts on the significance of his record-setting World Darts Championship victory, describing it as an “extraordinary journey” for him and his family.
The 17-year-old dominated the legendary darts player Michael van Gerwen in the finale at Alexandra Palace last night, triumphing 7-3 to become the youngest world champion in history.
The youth raced ahead to a 4-0 advantage and was never at risk, despite his Dutch opponent attempting a brief comeback.
He indicated that it was an intense and emotional evening for himself and his family, who observed from the audience.
“Yes, they’ve experienced an incredible journey, not just for this event, but throughout my childhood as well,” he told Sky Sports News earlier today.
He noted that he had witnessed some individuals online critiquing his parents for “not celebrating sufficiently” or for being less animated than anticipated.
“However, they are similar to me,” he remarked. “They don’t express many emotions. But once we took a photo on stage with my family, it was very meaningful.”
When queried about his parents’ nerves, Littler replied: “I believe my mum was. My dad claimed he wasn’t. I think when it was 4-0, he mentioned he sort of felt it a bit.”
“And then, of course, when I secured the win, that’s when we all expressed our emotions.”
Littler appeared composed and self-assured throughout the final, yet he disclosed that his anxiety posed a significant challenge at times.
“I felt alright [before the match], but as soon as I stepped onto the stage… I wished I wasn’t there.”
He stated that his prior tough challenges in the competition against Ian White and Ryan Joyce had taught him that he would soon be able to find his rhythm in the match.
The teenage prodigy, a supporter of Manchester United, revealed that he received a congratulatory message from David Beckham following his win, adding that knowing such celebrities as the former England footballer were observing his performance “feels surreal”.
“It illustrates how well I’ve performed for the sport. Not just for myself, but for the other hundreds of professionals out there.”

When inquired about his future aspirations, Littler expressed confidence in eventually surpassing Phil Taylor’s record of 16 World Darts Championships.
“Deep down, if I am determined to break Phil Taylor’s record, then I am confident in my capabilities,” Littler articulated.
“If I desire it, I am certain I can achieve it.”
Matt Porter, CEO of the Professional Darts Corporation, praised Littler after his monumental victory.
Speaking with sports broadcaster Jacque Beltrao on Sky News, he remarked: “He’s a very mature young man. He remains unflustered and doesn’t allow his emotions to overwhelm him.”
However, he tempered expectations for the teen’s prospects of overtaking Taylor’s 16 titles, stating, “The competition is incredibly fierce these days. But for Luke, I don’t see why he couldn’t become a multiple world title holder. Yet reaching 16 would be an extraordinary feat.”
