A 17-year-old male has been detained following the deaths of two teenagers in a New Year’s Day accident.
The festive celebrations took a heartbreaking turn in Hull, East Yorkshire, as two cars collided head-on.
The incident occurred with a grey VW Golf and a black Vauxhall Grandland traveling towards each other on Staithes Road, Preston, Hull, at approximately 1:20 am yesterday.
Despite the valiant efforts of emergency services, a 16-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old male was swiftly transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Two additional passengers, a 16-year-old female and a 17-year-old male, sustained injuries and were also taken to the hospital.
The girl is reported to be in a critical yet stable condition, while the boy’s status is classified as serious but stable.
The 34-year-old female driver of the Vauxhall sustained significant arm injuries and was admitted to the hospital.
A 62-year-old male accompanying her in the Vauxhall was also taken to the hospital for injuries that are no longer considered life-threatening, according to police reports.
Two other passengers experienced minor injuries in this severe collision.
Currently, the driver of the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old male, has been arrested on allegations of two counts of causing death through dangerous driving.
He has been released on bail pending the ongoing investigation.
The families mourning their lost loved ones are receiving support from specially trained officers ‘during this exceptionally challenging period,’ stated Humberside Police, which has also issued a request for any dashcam footage pertaining to the incident.
