Transitioning to ‘big school’ need not be intimidating! At The Mount, children thrive in a stimulating and joyful atmosphere, where adventure intertwines seamlessly with learning. The Mount Junior School marks the commencement of fun!
The junior school is now proudly accepting boys alongside girls into pre-school and reception (and Year 1 starting September 2025). Interested parents are invited to schedule an appointment to meet the faculty and explore the school.
Engage with our exceptionally friendly head of junior school and reception class teacher, hear from current students, and take a guided tour of our outstanding facilities. Discover how we foster a spirit of inquiry and exploration while navigating the safe and sprawling 16 acres where our children flourish daily.
At The Mount, the children’s curiosity leads the exploration! Students extend their thinking beyond the regular curriculum by diving deeper into subjects and making real-life connections that surpass conventional lessons, nurturing their inherent inquisitiveness to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning.
Afternoon activities are dedicated to the ‘creative curriculum’, called ‘Explore, Discover, Create’ (EDC). This curriculum encompasses history, geography, science, art, design technology, and music, all taught through a thematic approach. It emphasizes creative thought, exploration, discovery, and mental creation. We encourage children to think outside the box and even dismantle it!
Although predicting the precise nature of students’ future lives and careers can be challenging, Explore, Discover, Create focuses on nurturing 21st-century skills—such as imagination, problem-solving, independent thinking, and learning from setbacks—while also enhancing digital literacy.
To strengthen The Mount Junior School’s sense of community, every year group, beginning with reception, investigates the same theme, which stimulates school-wide dialogues. To spark enthusiasm among students, topics commence with a ‘Wow’ factor event. One year, the theme ‘Animals, Habitats, and the World’ kicked off with a ‘Wear It Wild’ Day, during which students expressed their creativity through animal-themed attire and had encounters with captivating creatures like snakes, tarantulas, and giant snails during a special visit from ZooLab.
After this thrilling introduction, each year group pursued a customized learning journey within the animal kingdom. Activities included simulating erupting volcanoes, producing animated films that illustrate animal life cycles, and, for the reception class, constructing an impressive toy zoo exhibition featuring carefully recreated habitats. This topic culminated in an unforgettable trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, allowing all junior school students to witness their classroom learnings come to life within a real-world environment. This focus on ‘thinking beyond the curriculum’ prepares students to confidently leave their mark on the world.
Our specially designated area in our green space for forest school, equipped with woodland trunk seats and a pit for roasting marshmallows, promotes immersive outdoor learning and fosters a love for nature, nestled in the historic city center of beautiful York.
Our extracurricular clubs offer activities such as coding, Mandarin, football, and family baking, enabling our junior school pupils to acquire life skills and broaden their globally relevant knowledge from an early age.
What Parents Say
“I just wanted to express how immensely impressed I am by the Explore, Discover, Create curriculum and my gratitude for the wonderful education my children are receiving at The Mount. I appreciate the expansive range of the curriculum and the opportunities our children have for independent study, group discussions, and profound thinking surrounding cultural and personal matters. It’s been fantastic for the entire family to join in the conversation over dinner discussing the Aztecs, and I’ve certainly learned a lot myself!” Junior School Parent.
