The UK is poised for a windy, rainy, and potentially snow-laden beginning to 2025, with extensive regions of the country under yellow weather alerts for January 1.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks in Blackpool have been annulled owing to predictions of strong winds in northwest England for tomorrow night.
Currently, three weather warnings issued by the Met Office are active throughout the day, affecting all regions of England, Wales, Northern Ireland, as well as the southern parts of Scotland.
The only regions exempt from the warnings are the northern sections of Scotland; however, there remains a yellow alert for rain and snow until 11:59 PM on December 31.
Here’s what meteorologists anticipate for the UK in the upcoming days, marking the onset of the new year.
England
A series of yellow weather warnings will impact various areas of England over the forthcoming days, including one scheduled for Monday.
This yellow alert for strong winds will commence for the North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM.
This warning alerts to possible travel interruptions in the vicinity and the chance of short-lived power outages.
Another yellow weather warning for wind is set to take effect from 7:00 AM on New Year’s Eve, covering the northeast of England, extending down to Bridlington in East Yorkshire and across to Carlisle in the northwest.
The warning indicates the likelihood of “strong westerly winds” that might cause travel disturbances on New Year’s Eve.
All of England will subsequently fall under a yellow weather alert for “very strong winds” starting from 9:00 AM on New Year’s Day, with a possibility of disruption in travel services and a minor chance of structural damage.
This advisory is expected to remain in effect until 6:00 AM.
Portions of northern England, such as Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, York, and Carlisle, will also be under a yellow weather warning for “heavy and persistent” snow beginning at 9:00 AM on New Year’s Day and lasting until 3:00 AM on January 2.
Wales
Wales is placed under two yellow weather alerts on New Year’s Day.
One warning, concerning heavy rain, encompasses a central corridor of Wales, stretching from the north coast to the south, and is effective from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM.
Following this, all regions of Wales will also experience a yellow weather alert for “very strong winds” from 9:00 AM on New Year’s Day until 6:00 AM on January 2, with potential disturbances to travel services and a minor risk of structural damage.
Scotland
Nearly the entirety of Scotland falls under a yellow weather advisory for rain and snow on Monday that is valid until 11:59 PM on New Year’s Eve.
It cautions that certain residences and enterprises may face flooding, leading to potential disruptions in travel services.
Orkney, which is exempt from this warning, is under a different advisory for snow that spans from 5am on New Year’s Eve until midnight.
The southern regions of Scotland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow, are also under a separate wind advisory from 7am on New Year’s Eve till 11pm.

The southern part of Scotland is further under a yellow weather warning for “heavy and continuous” snow, effective from 9am on New Year’s Day until 3am on 2 January.
Northern Ireland
A yellow weather alert has been issued for a significant portion of Northern Ireland, encompassing Belfast, Londonderry, Coleraine, and Larne, effective from 6am until 7pm on New Year’s Eve.
The entirety of Northern Ireland, spanning from Derry to Enniskillen and Newry to Ballycastle, was initially under a yellow weather warning for “heavy and persistent” snow from 7am until 11:59pm on New Year’s Day, but this has since been revoked by the Met Office.
