A man has been detained after a woman was discovered with life-threatening stab wounds at a residence in southwest London.
Gemma Devonish, 42, was pronounced dead at the dwelling on Nutfield Close, Carshalton shortly after 10:30 am on Thursday.
A 38-year-old man has been apprehended on suspicions of murder.
A perimeter has been established around Nutfield Close as forensic teams investigate for evidence.
In the meantime, detectives are conducting door-to-door inquiries.
Chief Superintendent for Sutton, Andy Brittain, expressed, ‘I share the disbelief and worry that this dreadful incident will evoke within the local community in Sutton.’
‘A dedicated team of specialized detectives is already making considerable advancements in this investigation and swiftly apprehended a suspect who is now in police custody.
‘Local residents will notice an increase in officer presence in and around Nutfield Close while crucial investigative activities are underway.
‘I want to express my gratitude to residents for their understanding while this investigation continues and I implore anyone with any concerns to engage with local officers so they can assist.’
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila remarked: ‘Our thoughts today are with Gemma’s family and friends who are striving to cope with this overwhelmingly tragic event.
‘We are extending all possible support to them.
‘It is clear that the broader community will also be affected, and I encourage anyone with any worries to speak with the local officers.
‘While we have secured an arrest, detectives remain hard at work gathering additional evidence as we construct a clearer narrative of the circumstances surrounding this tragic murder.
