Jean Adamson, the acclaimed author of children’s literature recognized for the Topsy And Tim book series, has passed away at the age of 96.
Her family, who confirmed her demise on Sunday, stated that her legacy will “live on in the hearts” of her loved ones and in those who “remember her through her tales”.
The Topsy And Tim collection chronicles the escapades of two twins and was conceptualized alongside her husband Gareth Adamson, who passed away in 1982.
This beloved series has resulted in over 150 books and a television adaptation.
In a statement issued by Topsy And Tim’s publisher, Ladybird Books, Adamson’s family noted: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the departure of our cherished Jean Adamson.”
“Jean was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and author whose compassion and warmth influenced the lives of every person she encountered.”
“Her absence will be deeply felt.”
“While we will take this time to grieve her departure, we will also make it a point to honor her extraordinary life.”
Born in 1928 in Peckham, London, the author pursued a course in illustration at Goldsmiths College in London.
She later began teaching there, focusing on illustration and design, where she also met her husband.
The couple wed in 1957 and relocated to Newcastle, where they commenced their work on children’s literature, in addition to creating original animations for Yorkshire TV during the 1970s.

Francesca Dow, managing director of Penguin Random House Children’s, which oversees Ladybird, remarked in a statement: “Jean and her husband Gareth’s creations were quite innovative for their era, characterized by Jean’s art style that was vibrant, simplistic, and uncluttered.”
“They ensured that the portrayals of these initial experiences were thoroughly researched, allowing parents and children to place their trust in them.”
“Additionally, in a remarkable move for that time, Topsy was given an equally prominent role in their adventures as Tim.”
“Jean will be profoundly missed. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy for children and their families through her finest works.”
The two characters were first introduced in Topsy And Tim’s Monday Book, which was initially published by Blackie in 1960.
The series has achieved sales of over 25 million copies globally, and in recent years, children have become acquainted with the tales of the twins through a television series that debuted on CBeebies in 2013.
