Three-point sharpshooter Jacob Groves acclimating to Sheffield Sharks atmosphere as they pursue retribution against London Lions
In that Friday evening clash at the Copper Box Arena in early November, the London Lions dealt the Sharks a harsh 92-68 defeat, a team undergoing changes with two summer signings having departed, one newcomer integrated into the lineup, and another player who had only just joined and did not participate.
However, Rodney Chatman III and Donovan Clay have now seamlessly adapted, enabling the Sharks to establish a rhythm, achieving victory in seven out of the following eight games across all competitions, allowing them to surpass London and claim the top position in the emerging Super League Basketball championship table.
Jacob Groves, a first-year forward hailing from Washington, observed that match as he recuperated from a minor injury, yet he has adjusted to the pace of British basketball more seamlessly than anticipated and anticipates that London will encounter a more formidable Sheffield squad when the league’s premier teams clash once more on Wednesday evening in the capital.
“We were disjointed as a unit back then, missing a ‘big’, dealing with injuries, and generally banged-up,” Groves relayed to The Yorkshire Post.
“This time we enter fully equipped, we’ve been executing solid basketball; I anticipate a highly competitive match.
“We had an excellent preparation session today, analyzing their strategies. We feel motivated; this matchup features the top two seeds, rendering it undoubtedly significant. We aim to go in there and strive for victory while competing at a high standard. However, this single game won’t shape the season, as there remains a substantial number of games to play.
“As an athlete, it’s vital to maintain equilibrium; neither getting too elated nor too disheartened, as this lifestyle is full of fluctuations, just as our league and the games we engage in can be. It’s essential to remain true to oneself. As long as the team is witnessing improvement throughout the season, that’s our primary focus.
“I believe we’ve discovered our rhythm. We experienced considerable roster changes at the beginning of the season, but now we possess a stable lineup, and our rotations are effective. It’s crucial for us to keep collaborating, continue sharing the ball, and remain focused defensively.”
The Sharks are showing promising development. Chatman adds a dynamic element at the point guard position, while Clay offers the much-needed presence on both ends of the floor in lieu of the injured Bennett Koch.
When he finds his rhythm, Groves can be an exceptionally lethal three-point shooter. His success rate from beyond the arc stands at 43.8 percent, ranking him eighth in the league. The 23-year-old has notched up over 20 points on three occasions.
“Much of it boils down to our game schemes; the team actively positions me effectively, and my teammates excel at delivering the ball to me,” Groves commented.
“Some nights everything aligns, and I find myself playing exceptionally well—that’s an objective of mine, to be efficient. I’ve taken pride in that aspect.
“I’m enjoying a fantastic rookie season, making a smooth transition into life over here.
“Regardless of the level you play at, winning games significantly eases life for everyone involved.”
