GB Women’s Olympic Journey Ends in Sheffield Heartbreak; Steelers Face Double Setback
After triumphing over Latvia with a score of 3-2 on Thursday and dominating Spain 3-0 on Saturday, they prepared for a direct showdown against the Netherlands in their final group match to decide who would advance to the next qualifying phase in February.
During a tense, high-stakes match, neither team succeeded in finding the back of the net in regulation time, necessitating extra play.
It was 4 minutes and 14 seconds into the overtime when the Netherlands netted the decisive goal as Savine Wielenga pushed the puck home from a rebound off goalkeeper Ella Howard, who had deflected Dutch shots up to that point.
In addition to this, the Sheffield Steelers faced disappointment over the weekend with two defeats in the Elite League.
They seemed to have regained their momentum after overcoming recent injury challenges due to a busy European itinerary, achieving a resounding 9-0 victory against Guildford Flames at the Utilita Arena on Wednesday night. However, three days later, they managed only a single goal in a 2-1 loss to the on-form Glasgow Clan, and less than a day later, they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Belfast Giants.
After Saturday’s loss, where Daniel Leavens scored their sole goal, head coach Aaron Fox remarked, “It’s frustrating; we generated numerous opportunities, but the pucks just weren’t finding the net for us.”
In the NIHL National League, Hull Seahawks experienced a 5-2 defeat against Swindon Wildcats on Saturday night, while Leeds Knights celebrated a 3-1 victory over the Romford Raiders, whom they faced again just a day later.
Sheffield Steeldogs emerged victorious with a 4-2 win at Bristol Pitbulls on Saturday, bouncing back after a 6-3 loss at home to Peterborough Phantoms on Friday.
