As the holiday season draws near, people throughout Britain are undoubtedly ‘hoping for a white Christmas.’
Recent months have seen Britons endure a challenging autumn and early winter, with weather disruptions from Storms Ashley, Connall, Bert, and most recently, Darragh hitting the UK.
The country has experienced substantial rains, winds reaching up to 90 mph, and even snowfall in the preceding weeks.
With Christmas approaching, the Met Office has shared their predictions regarding the weather forecast for the coming weeks, including Christmas Day.
In the week leading up to December 25, the Met Office anticipates an ‘unsettled’ weather pattern—does this imply a white Christmas for anyone in the UK?
Which areas in the UK may experience snow on Christmas Day?
The Met Office has indicated that the northern regions of the UK are most likely to experience snowfall during Christmas.
Their forecast states: ‘The expected scenario is for an unstable weather regime to prevail for much of next week, with intermittent periods of rain followed by blustery showers, particularly frequent and possibly wintry at times in the northwest.
‘Winds may also be quite strong at times, especially in northern areas, while the southern regions might experience longer periods of drier and possibly more stable weather, although it may still be quite breezy here as well.’
Beginning on Christmas Eve, some individuals in the UK may be fortunate enough to witness snowfall.
The Met forecasts: ‘Overall, primarily unsettled conditions are likely, with spells of wind and rain followed by showers impacting most regions, particularly the northern and northwestern UK.
‘There is also a likelihood of sleet and snow at times, particularly in elevated regions in the north. However, there are hints that more stable weather conditions could emerge, most likely in the south toward the end of December or into early January.
‘Temperatures are expected to remain around the average, with any more stable periods presenting a risk of frost and fog.’
It has been 14 years since a widespread ‘white Christmas’ graced the UK, occurring back in 2010.
The Met Office characterized the weather that Christmas as ‘very atypical.’
