Tragically, a man has lost his life following a significant fire that impacted an apartment building in Cumbria.
Residents in Kirkby Lonsdale awoke to reports of a fire at a residence on Main Street shortly before 6am this morning.
Individuals were evacuated to a temporary shelter at the Methodist Church and later relocated to alternative lodging as a result of the fire, with instructions to keep windows and doors closed.
The emergency services have confirmed that a man in his 40s perished in the incident.
Authorities stated he was found within the premises where the fire originated and was pronounced dead on-site around 6.30am.
A second man sought medical attention at the Lancashire Infirmary with minor injuries and to be examined for possible smoke inhalation. No additional casualties or injuries are presumed.
Superintendent Paddy O’Hara, who heads the Strategic Coordinating Group managing the fire’s response, remarked: ‘The cause of the fire remains unclear. Investigators from both Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria Constabulary are ready to enter the building when it’s safe to proceed.’
‘I extend my gratitude to the emergency services personnel and our partner agencies for their diligent efforts in Kirkby Lonsdale today, as well as to the local community for their understanding.’
Main Street B6254 continues to be closed this evening, hours after the fire incident, and residents have been advised against traveling into the town center while emergency services conduct their operations at the location.
‘We urge the public not to enter the town at this moment; however, further updates will be provided as soon as feasible to ensure support for the local community and businesses during this challenging time,’ stated Cumbria Police.
