‘A family’s most terrifying ordeal’: ‘Perilous’ Huddersfield individual apprehended by police while committing sexual assault on a child in their bedroom sentenced to prison
On the night of April 20, 2024, Saqib Khan, aged 40, residing on Hanson Lane in Huddersfield, unlawfully entered a family’s dwelling.
Upon entering the residence, he proceeded to a child’s bedroom where he committed sexual assault against the minor, as presented in court.
Relatives of the child heard the ruckus but could not access the child’s room.
The child’s father resorted to calling 999 and stepped outside, where he flagged down two police officers who were near the location.
The officers forced their way into the room, successfully subduing Khan before apprehending him.
Following the incident, Khan faced charges related to the sexual assault.
In a trial conducted in October, Khan was found guilty of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 10.
On Thursday (Nov 21), he was sentenced to a decade in prison during a hearing at Leeds Crown Court.
The 40-year-old will also be required to register on the Sex Offenders list for life upon his release and has been subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
This order will impose immediate arrest and prosecution should he violate any conditions following his release from incarceration.
Detective Inspector Tal Laher from the Kirklees District Police Safeguarding Unit stated, “This was an appalling crime in which Saqib Khan subjected his victim and their parents to what any family would deem a horrific nightmare.
“There is no doubt that he is a highly threatening sexual offender, and the situation could have escalated had he not been restrained by the two police constables who noticed the child’s father outside and intervened.
“Their prompt actions in detaining the perpetrator while simultaneously offering assistance to a distressed family deserve recognition.”
He further remarked, “We hope that Khan’s imprisonment today will provide some solace to his victim and family, and I commend them for their bravery in supporting the prosecution.
“Sexual crimes are always investigated by specially trained detectives who prioritize the needs of victims in every single inquiry.”
