England has achieved promotion back to League A of the Nations League following a commanding 5-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland – this match marked Lee Carsley’s final appearance as head coach.
After a scoreless first half, Ireland’s defender Liam Scales received a red card for a second yellow when he fouled Jude Bellingham in the penalty area.
Harry Kane then converted a penalty to give England the lead, subsequently, Anthony Gordon and Conor Gallagher struck two goals within a mere six minutes.
Substitutes Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis further added to the tally for the home side at Wembley.
The 5-0 defeat relegates the Republic of Ireland to the play-offs, while England rejoins League A – competing alongside teams such as France, Spain, and Italy.
The match signified Carsley’s tenure as interim manager, with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel now set to lead the team after being appointed England’s new head coach in October.
Commenting on Sunday’s match, Carsley expressed feeling “a bit of relief” at securing promotion, adding to ITV: “I wanted the England side to be thrilling to watch, prioritizing an attacking style.
“I watch them every day at the training facility, and now others have witnessed it too. It’s instilled confidence in me and the staff that we are capable of succeeding in this role.
“One always questions their own abilities, wondering if they could indeed make it work.”

FA executive Mark Bullingham also made a statement appreciating Carsley’s contributions after the match, saying: “The players have genuinely enjoyed collaborating with Lee and his staff – they have made a significant impact in their interim capacities.
“Lee will now revert to his role with the Under-21s and will continue to play an instrumental role in nurturing England’s top young talents.”
England will now shift their focus to the World Cup qualifying draw happening on December 13 – where they are positioned in Pot 1.
Tuchel will officially assume his responsibilities on January 1.
