Davina McCall has disclosed that she is set to undergo a brain surgery after medical practitioners detected a benign tumor.
The 57-year-old TV presenter shared through a video on Instagram that the tumor is a colloid cyst, which she referred to as “extremely uncommon”.
She mentioned that the likelihood of having it is “three in a million,” explaining that she found out about it a few months earlier, after a firm offered her a health scan in exchange for delivering a speech on menopause.
She confessed: “For a time, I somewhat buried my head in the sand, and then I consulted several neurosurgeons, gathering numerous opinions. I came to understand that I must have it removed.”
Characterizing it as “large for the area” it occupies, she stated that it measures 14mm in width and “needs to be extracted, because if it expands, it could lead to complications.”
She detailed that the removal would be performed through a craniotomy, elaborating on the process: “They will access the top of my head and navigate through two halves of my brain to reach the center.”
“They will retrieve the cyst, take it out, empty it, and voilà”.
She added: “Please keep me in your thoughts, I’m feeling positive”.
McCall continued: “I’m doing alright. It’s been a rollercoaster. Naturally, we’ve experienced a lot”.
She stated that she would be hospitalized for around nine days, though during her recuperation, she’d be “off my phone for some time”.
In a light-hearted manner, she advised her followers “not to fret about me,” admitting, “I’m already doing enough of that!”
She further commented: “I’m not too concerned, and I feel positive, trusting fully in my surgeon and their team. I’m leaving it in their capable hands. They know exactly what to do, and I’ll focus on recovering after.”
She concluded with, “Catch you on the other side”.
In a post accompanying her video on Instagram, her partner – hairstylist Michael Douglas – expressed that she was in “excellent condition” and in “very capable hands”.
“The support from others is incredibly impactful,” he added. He mentioned that he would be providing “the occasional update from her account” and indicated she would read the messages when she was able to do so.
He also featured in the video, stating he would “keep an eye on [Davina]”, adding, “she’s in very good hands”.
McCall gained prominence while hosting on MTV in the mid-1990s, and subsequently on Channel 4’s Streetmate, eventually becoming a beloved figure as the host of Big Brother from 2000 to 2010.
She has continued to present shows across various networks and was honored with the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) designation in the 2023 Birthday Honours for her contributions to broadcasting.
McCall has three children, comprising two daughters and a son, with her second spouse, presenter Matthew Robinson.
